Porter House New York, the fabulous steak house at the Time Warner Center, is the current home of the highly esteemed chef, Michael Lomonaco, formerly of '21' and Windows on the World.

Since its opening, Porter House New York has been named one of the “Best New Restaurants 2007" by Esquire Magazine, and received high acclaim from both the Zagat and Michelin New York City Guides.

Did you know that before a porterhouse was the term for a kind of steak it was the name for a meeting place?  "Porter houses" brought together businessmen, merchants, sea captains and travelers to enjoy a glass of porter or ale and a substantial meal ~ well, that's why I was there!

My husband and I and two other couples with whom we are good friends dined there on a Thursday evening.  The restaurant, which seats 140, is adorned in dark, glimmering wood, soft lighting and has such spectacular views of Central Park that it's almost irrelevant anyway.

I didn't choose the restaurant so I was a little concerned as to what my limited choices in a steak house might be.  After I glanced at the menu and had a glass of the fabulous bottle of red that kicked off the evening (followed by a couple more), I was at ease.  (The wines are very well selected.)

I began with a crisp salad tossed with a delicious vinaigrette.  I debated the rest of my choices ~ a smattering of organic veggie side dishes like fresh leaf spinach sautéed with garlic or asparagus and pan roasted mushrooms, but settled on the portobello burger.  Well, the mushroom caps were so plump and perfectly prepared that I was fully sated by the meal.  It was "meaty" and delicious, and the french fries that accompanied them were just perfectly cooked and salted.  The company was wonderful, and the meal was as well.
