Trestle on Tenth 02/11/2011

For two years I worked on 23rd Street between 5th and 6th (in the stately and gorgeous original toy building) so I used to eat locally, but honestly?  Never anywhere good!

I was meeting a friend who works in that area, and he recommended Trestle.   I glanced at the menu on line and was a little skeptical of how a vegan would fare, but knowing him, I took the risk.  Let's just say, to call him an expert on great food is a serious understatement.

Trestle is located on the corner of 24th and 10th ~ not remotely near my current office and not the prettiest part of the city, but the atmosphere inside was really nice.  There is gentle, ambient light from big windows and ceiling fixtures, a generous bar (though I didn't partake) and the tables were wood and had that farmer table kind of feel.

Our server was totally pleasant and accommodating, so she helped me to make my selections which were, in addition to delicious, camera-ready perfect!  (Too bad I didn't have one with me...)

To go with my lemon verbena tea (since the weather outside was gloomy at best) I ordered three sides: roasted beets, brussel sprouts (yes, I do that a lot) and sauteed sunchokes (Jerusalem artichokes) with fresh parsley.  Those were my favorite!  Sliced and sauteed in olive oil until fork tender...I would eat them every day.  The brussel sprouts?  Practically candied though I don't think any sweetener was used.  And the beets?  Roasted, gorgeous, simple and really nicely cooked.

If you ever find yourself in that part of town, or are willing to catch a cab and go, it's surely on my recommended list.
